We are having a few band width issues so be please be patient when watching the videos. When a few thousand people watch the videos at once, it gets a little bogged down.
Thanks for the props Lance.

Rand Miller kicks off the 2009 season.
Freddy Rodriguez (Rock Racing), Roman Kilun (Health Net) Rand Miller (Webcor Alto Velo)Rand got into the winning three rider break today. Rand is definatley an aggressive rider who can deliver the power. Good to see his form coming along early in the season.

Stage 8 of the Tour of California
Two words....Mount Palomar
YIKES! This climb is the real deal! 12 miles to the very top starting at the taco stand!
The course starts with a one mile climb ( 5 minutes to the top) Then a 2.5 mile -15 minute climb followed by a descent to the base of Palomar. Palaomar is a tricky climb. The first 5 miles up is mountain hwy at around 5 to 6% followed by a false flat of .5 to 1 mile. Then, turn left and start the real climb for 7 miles of 7 to 9% love. The last 7 miles are switch back and will crush the peloton. We will find out who the true strong climbers are. The key, in my opinion, is not to go solo here because it is way to far to the line to stay away. I would put together a small group of the top guys and crest together. Then work together to the last 15 minute climb up cole grade and battle for the win up Coles 9% hard climb. Yep, Cole grade is NOT easy. The stage winner will attack on Cole and ride away to the line. Maybe the overall winner will also be the stage 8 winner. The race will be won or lost on stage 8. If you want to see all the athletes suffer up a big climb, go to Palomar. If you want to see the GC winner in all their glory and talent, watch him attack andlight the fireworks on Cole Grade. Cole grade, only 2.5 miles long, will be awesome!

Stage 7 of the Tour of California
Hilly but manageable.
The first 10 miles offer a couple short, steep climbs of 1 mile, .5 miles and .6 miles. At 15 miles to 28 miles the course rises slightly. Then, at 28 miles, turn on Angeles Forest Hwy and start the rollers up hill. We started shooting at mile 31 when the climb started . I think it was a 7+ mile climb that was not too bad. Certainly not enough to break up the group. Then an 8 mile descent and two more climbs. One was 3.5 miles and the other was 2 miles. I cruised them at 250 to 275 watts because I never knew how steep the climbs would be around the corner.
It is possible for a good break to work but it would have to be the right combination and total commitment from each rider in the break. I say this turns out to be a sprinters win.
Stage 8 on deck for Friday.

Stage 4 of the Tour of California.
I was behind the wheel today filming a group of riders following the 4th stage of the TOC. Stage starts out dead flat and goes east to the mountains. Climbing starts at mile 20 and continues to mile 70. There is the fiirst climb that goes up to 2100 feet but over a long distance so not too bad. Then the fun starts....a 10 minute climb followed by three 15min climbs back to back, a descent and a 30 minute climb. Then a monster descent and 25 flat miles to the finish. Even though it was around 10,000 feet of climbing, the long 25 mile flat finish will give the sprinters a chance to get back into the race. So, here is the way I see the race so far.
Prolog = Dave Z or Sven Tuft
Stage 1= attack on the last 1.5 mile climb, a handfull of guys get away on the fast tricky descent and the break sticks to the line.
Stage 2 = Tanitas creek softens them up. Bonny Dune crushes them and a handfull of the real GC guys hold on to the line.
Stage 3 = Sierra climb is too soon and over by mile 10. Patterson pass is not hard enough so this stage goes to the sprinters.
Stage 4 = Hard! Up and down all day. But, the sprinters have a great chance to latch back on over the last 45 miles of descent and flat to the line.
Stage 5 = Flat to rolling. Interesting stage....could be the easiast or hardest stage depending on the wind. If the wind is strong on race day, this course is living hell. I have almost flipped my truck and trailer through this section....yes, the wind is that bad.
Stage 6: TT Please remove the "pain part of your brain" prior to the start and ride like you stole it.
Stage 7: Recon tomorrow!

Filming the Tour of California Stages.
Yikes, I am tired. Damain Gonzales and I have been traveling around Northern California since Sunday filming the climbs of the TOC. We are taking turns climbing and filming. We have completed the Prolog and 3 stages.
So far the race is very hilly with three 15 minute climbs and lots of rollers on stage 1, two 30 minute climbs and three short climbs on stage 2 and then the mother of all "Climbs that SUCK" on stage 3. That's correct, Sierra Grade SUCKS. That is such a hard/steep climb. I did the climb today and cracked 1 mile into the 3.6 mile climb. The only saving grace is that it is relatively short at 3.6 miles. It is the steepest climb I have ever been on.
Stage 4 looks hilly and we plan to ride it tomorrow with a couple domestic pros who are scouting the course for their TOC bid. Then off to stage 7 and 8. Stage 7 looks hilly but managable. Stage 8 will put riders DEEP INTO THE HURT BOX. The real question is, will the race be over by the last stage.
We will produce 10 to 15minute videos of each stage when done. They will be on the Williams Cycling front page around the 15 of Jan for all to see.
